The Zeltweg circuit was a military air base
before hosting the first Austrian F1 Grand Prix.
• Last name : Zeltweg circuit
• Location : Austria
• Distinctive signs : former airfield, like the Silverstone circuit.
• Birth : creation of the aerodrome in 1959; only one Grand Prix in 1964
• Distance from the circuit: 3,2 km
• Number of turns: 4
• Record: 1'09''800, made by Graham Hill for BRM. ((1'14''820 very exactly).
This place seemed to have interesting characteristics for the competitions of Formula 1. The transformation of that of Silverstone having been a success, the idea to use this old military aerodrome seemed rather good, on paper. He was the first to host a Grand Prix in Austria. Composed of four straight lines, the boundaries were made with bales of straw. There was only one Formula 1 competition in 1964, then the converted air base then hosted the 500 meter Zeltweg from 1966 to 1968. Another circuit, the Österreichring, was built on the other side of the mountain where was the first Zeltweg circuit. It was he who hosted the Austrian Grand Prix in 1970, so he replaced the old circuit whose layout was not suitable for motor racing.
